笔舔为正四方，盖可揭，作盒状，顶端一侧原为双通插销，可与身自由打开。身座一体，底雕四矮足。砚身边沿嵌银丝草龙纹，做工细致繁复；盖上嵌百宝（琥珀、玳瑁、虬角、螺钿），构成梅花牡丹蝴蝶纹饰。各种工艺特征均表现此拍品的入份及品级相当高。底刻“张氏珍玩”四字款。百宝嵌又称“周制”，它是采用珍珠宝石及其他各种名贵材料来对器物进行镶嵌的一种装饰技法。据《西京杂记》记载：“汉制，天子笔管以错宝为研。”百宝嵌源自明代嘉靖年间，扬州有一位名叫周筑的漆器工匠，他巧妙利用珍珠、珊瑚、玉石、水晶、玛瑙等名贵材料的质感和颜色，组合成山水人物、花卉翎毛等装饰图案，嵌于漆器或者木器上，人们为它取名“百宝嵌”。
