AMERICAN SCHOOL (Early 19th century) "Folk Portrait of George Washington" Oil on canvas. 54 x 39 inches; Frame: 62 3/4 x 48 inches. Unsigned. Provenance: This painting was highlighted in "The Canton Repos" 1941: WORK OF AN UNKNOWN EARLY AMERICAN ARTIST, is this oil painting of George Washington, which served for more than a century as a mural decoration in an old tavern in Dauphin, Pa, near Harrisburg. Exaggerated foreshortening of the figure of Washington compensated for the elevated placement of the mural in the old tavern, while it may not be classed as a great painting it is a good example of early American oils. Its coloring is rich with blues, reds and greens. It came into the possession of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph K. Vodrey of 1615 Market ave N, through R. W. Gregory, Harrisburg antique collector, and Perry Alexander, Harrisburg antique dealer, who discovered it in the old tavern during a visit there. It is 4 feet wide by 6 feet high and now is framed in tulip wood with a mirror insert. *The canvas has been relined.
