Francisco Hernandez was born in a family of artists silversmiths. At the age 23 he was already a drawing teacher and his favourite subjects were the landscapes and boats of Mahon port. Around 1890 he moved to Barcelona, where he studies in the School of Fine Arts and completed his pictorial training with Eliseo Meifren, whose style will influence all his works. As a painter, he was an outstanding painter of marines, and he reached great prestige and fame with his marines and boat paintings. In 1898, the Tasso house in Barcelona commissioned a collection of watercolours depicting warships for a book about the Spanish navy. He exhibited his works in Barcelona, Madrid, Mahon and South America with a great success. His landscapes are described as robust, and his boats show beautiful foreshortenings, good drawings and especially, colour. In the Ateneo de Maó collection there is a large size oil canvas depicting two steamers crossing each other during their journey, which is a good example of his speciality in this kind of images. In Majorca, he was related with Tito Cittadini and Anglada Camarasa, with whom he maintained a great friendship. Hernandez Monjo is considered as one of the most important maritime painters of the Spanish painting of the 20th century. He is considered as the most representative of the 18th century Minorcan painters. Many of his paintings are preserved in the collection of the Ateneo de Maó. His works are highly appreciated by gallerists and art collectors, specially in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
