Edo period (1615-1868), mid-18th centuryKakejiku (hanging scroll); ink on paper mounted in silk, depicting Daruma with his characteristic frown beneath the well-known Zen Buddhist declaration Jikishin ninshin kensho jobutsu (Point directly to the human heart, see your own nature and become Buddha), sealed Kokan'i, Hakuin and Ekaku; with a wooden storage box.
