Sheppard by Bowen & Co. and C.F. Tholey, and an additional plate of Parus occidentalis after Elliot, 21 mounted engraved illustrations by W.J. Linton in the text, the illustrations, 8 plates and a few text leaves very lightly toned, 4 plates with very short tears at fore-edge neatly repaired on verso, one with small patch of text adhered at gutter, modern green half morocco, t.e.g., lower cover scuffed [Anker 129; Fine Bird Books, p.95; Nissen IVB 294; Sabin 22227; Zimmer, p. 205], large folio (600 x 450mm.), New York, the Author, [1866-]1869
|ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES PRINTED, many of which were sold to subscribers, 71 names appearing on the subscribers list. "Since the time of Wilson and Audubon, no work has been published upon American Ornithology, containing life-size representations of the various species that have been discovered since the labors of those great men were finished" (Preface). The additional plate, though mentioned in the list of plates, is not assigned a number and instead given the note "See Introduction." Although this plate has been recorded in other copies offered at auction, none of the cited bibliographies call for, or even mention, it.
