Entitled "Bijoux de Diamants" this collection was launched with characteristic audacity at her private residence on 29 Rue du Faubourg St-Honoré during the Great Depression and with resounding success. Quoted at the time as saying that in those times of austerity, she was seeking authenticity and true value by using diamonds and platinum, she broke further with tradition by displaying her creations on mannequins and wax models, where previously flat trays had been the standard. The iconic headline necklace from this 1932 collection was the Comète. Crafted in platinum it has no clasp – Chanel disliked clasps on necklaces - hugging the contours of the neck with the diamond tails dramatically illuminating the decolleté. Chanel's fascination with the comets and stars has been attributed by many to one particular corridor she would walk along as a child that was paved with geometric patterns and stars, while Chanel herself said she "wanted to cover women with constellations. Stars! Stars of all sizes..." Crafted in platinum and with the same 6 diamond tails, this necklace mirrors the original 1932 version showing on this page.
