Untitled Dated 92 and numbered 4 on the bottom side Ceramics, diam. 25.1 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands N.B.: With the intention to design jewellery, Geert Lap acquired a kiln circa 1968. However the artist soon concentrated on manufacturing ceramic objects and now enjoys international recognition. His work has been included in the collection of, amongst others, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Geert Lap: “I enjoy working in clay, but I’m not particularly interested in the process, but in the outcome. I’m not interested in the mystical fuss surrounding earth and fire. I’m also not interested in accidental results that are the consequence of an uncontrollable process. I have a clear picture in my mind of what I want to make and how it should turn out and nothing else. This applies to the form as well as the colour.” Lap is able to constantly make new selections from the available forms which he represents in a new light by means of his personal treatment. Lap reduces the well-known forms to the utmost, abstracts them, and subsequently embellishes them with a matte glaze. The hand thrown forms are characterised by an industrial perfection. Lap has built up an ageless oeuvre that bears testimony to a perfect command of the profession and a perfect sense of form and decoration.
