Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 11th to 14th Dynasty, ca. 2055 to 1650 BCE. A lovely and large scarab, hand-carved from chalky-white steatite. The scarab bears a rounded topside with incised insectile features such as a small triangular head, recessed legs, and folded wing panels with curvilinear embellishments. The bottom is adorned by three columns of hieroglyphic text, the two outer being identical, and the central column likely presenting an offering. The tips of the scarab are attached to a large encrusted bronze ring that was likely worn by either dignitaries or mummified individuals. Custom museum-quality display stand included.
