A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA
NORTHEASTERN INDIA, PALA PERIOD, 9TH/10TH CENTURYHimalayan Art Resources item no.61727 11 cm (4 1/4 in.) high
|The caster delicately models Shakyamuni's right hand in the gesture of charity towards all sentient beings. The stepped plinth and double-lotus construction underneath is idiomatic of 9th/10th century bronzes from Nalanda and Kurkihar (cf. von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, pp.255-57, nos.55C & 56B). As an early Pala bronze, the heavy-lidded eyes, puckered lips, and sheer robe, readily show vestiges of the Gutpa ideal developed at Sarnath (cf. Pal, The Ideal Image, New York, 1978, p.68, no.15).
