A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF VAJRAPANI
TIBET, CIRCA 13TH CENTURYWith copper inlaid eyes and urna, and silver inlaid mouth.Himalayan Art Resources item no.61751 7.5 cm (3 in.) high
|Unusual for sculptures of Vajrapani, the caster has depicted the sun and moon on Vajrapani's chest, representing the union of Wisdom and Compassion. These symbols allude to Vajrapani's status, not only as Buddhism's foremost protector, but also an enlightened Buddha. An effigy of Akshobhya presides within his crown. This early Tibetan sculpture draws inspiration from Pala Indian models, with its plump lotus petals between beaded rims and its emphasis on a lightly adorned full figure.
