|ProvenancePrivate UK collection: acquired from Julian Harding, Cambridge, in the early 1980s.According to a private communication between the seller and Robert Skelton (then at the Victoria and Albert Museum), the painting may depict a scene from a Punjabi folk tale about Gopinath, or alternatively from an Avadhi romance, or from the story of Laur Chanda and Mrigavati. For an apparently closely related scene, with close correspondences in the bearded and turbanned figure, the green of the grass, and the floral border, see a painting then in the collection of Rolf and Ute Rettberg, Sotheby's, Indian and Southeast Asian Art including Modern Indian Paintings, 24th March 2004, lot 131.
