A fine patinated brass garden sundial with equation of time, W.N. Last, Bury St. Edmunds, mid 19th century The 10 inch circular plate applied with a shaped gnomon angled at approximately 51 degrees and centred with an thirty-two point compass rose with stylised leafy scroll and hatched decoration to segments within track annotated with the month of the year and full annual calendar annotated with solar time variance (equation of time) inscribed WATCH SLOWER and WATCH FASTER twice to the outer band of the centre, the chapter ring with Roman numerals IIII-XI-VIII and tied lozenge half hour markers within outer track divided into sixtieths denoting one minute intervals with every ten numbered, the plate signed W.N. Last, Bury St. Edm. and with wolf’s head crest incorporating motto HAEC NUNQUAM FALLIT IMAGO between the IIII and VIII numerals, and inscribed BODIAM at twelve o’clock; set onto a tapered dressed limestone pedestal with egg-and-dart carved table and block base cut with canted angles, 113cm (44ins) high overall. William Nelson Last is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in Bury St. Edmunds 1839-79.
