A George III small ebonised bracket timepiece, William Vale, London, circa 1785 The seven-day four pillar single-fusee movement with tapered plates and verge escapement regulated by short bob pendulum, the 5 inch brass break-arch dial with rococo scroll engraved silvered centre incorporating a second dummy winding hole within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to outer track, with pierced steel hands and plumed female mask and scroll cast spandrels to angles, the arch with silvered boss signed Will’m Vale, London flanked by conforming Indian mask and scroll cast mounts, the case with hinged brass carrying handle and small pineapple finials over glazed front door applied with gilt scroll mounts to the upper quadrant panels, the sides with slender break-arch windows, the rear now with plain wooden door, on moulded skirt base with squab feet, 32cm (12.5ins) high excluding handle; with a copy of Barder, Richard C.R. The Georgian Bracket Clock Antique Collectors’ Club, Woodbridge 1993, signed by the author, dj, (2). A William Vale is twice recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World firstly as apprenticed in 1773 and then working from Bunhill Row, London circa 1784-90. Literature: The current lot is illustrated in Barder, Richard C.R.
