Document Signed ("Enoch Lilly"), partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, oblong 4to (155 x 200 mm), Palmyra, Ontario County, NY, December 11, 1821, assessing damages to a property holder caused by the construction of the Erie Canal, page lightly toned.SIGNED BY THE FIRST WHITE MAN BORN IN PALMYRA AND AN EARLY MORMON. In 1821 the Canal Commissioners were authorized to act as appraisers for the purpose of determining the amount of damages suffered by property owners from the construction of the Erie Canal. The present document attests that Asa R. Swift of Palmyra has suffered a depreciation of $600, from the canal's course through the farm as well as "inconveniences resulting from the occupation of land for the purposes of said Canal, as the detaching about ten acres, from all convenient access from the rest...."
