A code system in place from 1857 to 1900 was updated on 1 January 1901, and then used exclusively after 1 January 1902. The new system increased the number of flags from 18 flags plus a code pennant, to 26 flags and a code pennant, with the 8 new flags representing the vowels A E I O U, and the letters X Y Z.
