笔筒以高浮雕技法，描绘苏轼携友夜游赤壁的情景。众人共乘轻舟，舟中苏轼、鲁直、佛印三人促膝而坐，相谈正欢；然舟尾艄公正奋力划桨，脚下童子弯膝煮茶，手边茶具、提盒刻画极为细致。两岸山峦陡峭，赤壁舟下水波涌动，古木苍松屹立山石间，远方流云缥缈，意境悠远。此笔筒似以《后赤壁赋》为题材，船夫昂首奋力之状似预示舟下水流湍急，正如「江流有声，断岸千尺」所描绘者，舟中苏轼正回首凝望高耸赤壁，仿佛正感怀「山高月小，水落石出。曾日月之几何，而江山不可复识矣」之情。松皮苍古穆然，松针堆云茂盛，一块一针皆细致雕琢而出，工而不匠。人物山石细致刻划，错落有致，转折圆熟，与此同时，峭岩陡壁之处又大胆留白，占据画面近半，使全图顿然舒朗。
