A pair of George IV painted and lacquered papier mâché trays, circa 1825, of cartouche form, painted with views of Brighton, one with St Peter's Church, the other with the Chain Pier, one indistinctly signed D Cox, 24cm high, 27cm wide CATALOGUE NOTES: Soon after the Royal Suspension Chain Pier was constructed in 1823, it became a much visited tourist attraction, being described by guide books as ‘a curious specimen of modern ingenuity and scientific art’. The artist John Constable depicted the pier around 1826-27. This painting is now in the Tate collection. Papier mâché items such as the trays in the present lot were likely sold as souvenirs
