A VERY RARE DOULTON LAMBETH STONEWARE IRISH WHISKEY FLASK, circa 1884, modelled by Kate M Davies, of globular form with a slender neck and strap handle, the front applied in relief with a woman and pig against a buff ground, within a shaped cartouche titled 'GREENLEES BROTHERS / SPECIAL / OLD IRISH WHISKEY', the reverse with two large florets against a stylised foliate band, glazed in shades of green, brown and blue against a mottled brown ground, 17.5cm high, impressed 'DOULTON LAMBETH' factory mark and 'Rd No 4817', incised artist's monogram 'KD' and impressed lettersLiterature: A smaller version of this flask is illustrated by Alan Blakeman & Paul Bloomfield, 'Whisky Galore' (2010), p.98, cat.B243, who state that the 'Woman with Pig' advertising version exists in three sizes (6, 8.5 and 9.5 inches high). The flask in the present lot, at around 7 inches high, is therefore apparently a previously unrecorded size, which makes it exceptionally rare.
