Matteo Ripa (1682 – 1746) was an Italian Jesuit missionary and a court artist during the reign of Kangxi Emperor 1711-1723. He introduced copperplate engraving to China and his series of prints depicting the Summer Mountain Retreat is held in the Imperial Collection of the National Palace Museum (New Visions at the Ch’ing Court: Giuseppe Castiglione and Western-Style Trends, 2007, cat. no. 4). This memoir describes details of his time at the Imperial court including detailed descriptions of the Imperial gardens.
