宋雨桂，山东临邑人，后迁居东北。自幼随母习画。1960考入鲁迅美术学院绘画系预科。毕业於鲁美版画系，后参军。1957年毕业于抚顺一中。1979年 调入辽宁画院任专职创作员。1980年作品《故乡恋》引起美术界关注，自此多次参加全国美展并获奖数次，多幅作品入藏中国美术馆。1988年开始赴国外展览，作品受到日本、新加坡艺术界及收藏家鉴赏，被多家公私收藏机构收藏，并在香港地区拍卖会上连创佳绩。
