此拍品为巧妙运用天然竹根之形状、天然之纹理圆雕而就。松树枝干粗壮，拔地而起，顶端盘曲虬结，松针团簇或聚或散。五柳先生立于松下，其宽额丰颊，茂髯披胸，束发岸帻，广袍长袖。腰系绅带，足履草鞋，手中淡菊一束，隐士之风尽显。竹根选材饱满缜密，莹洁温润，刀法沉凝浑厚，人物雍容有神，饶有古趣；在人物神态的刻画上，开相仙风道骨，天真自然，将五柳先生雅逸隐士的形象表现得栩栩如生，细节处理更是细致入微，衣褶曲卷，雕琢线条浑厚，细腻到位，厚实而温润。竹雕整体层次丰富，同时细节又生动细腻，体现出匠师娴熟的雕刻功底和良好的艺术表现力。
