1st century BC-5th century AD. A fragment of ceramic roof tile with ledge to one edge, with partial stamped rubric '[...]O XV APO' for Legio XV Apollinaris. 3.6 kg, 28cm (11"). From the Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, formed since 1985; acquired from Simon Shipp, circa 2008. The 15th Legion dedicated to Apollo was raised by Emperor Octavian in 41 or 40 BC in order to end the occupation of Sicily by Sextus Pompeius. After the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, the legion was sent to garrison Illyricum, where it probably remained until 6 BC. By 9 AD the legion was based in Carnuntum, in Pannonia. Its subsequent career involved suppression of the Jewish Revolt and a minor role in the Dacian War. It was still nominally in existence in the 5th century. [No Reserve]
