Carved, Painted, and Gilt Oval Plaque, China, c. 1850-75, with carved surround of Chinese landscape vignettes and foliate designs, and central gilt eagle on shield, the eagle's talons clutching arrows and an olive branch, ht. 11 1/2, wd. 13 in. Literature: See Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, for an illustration and discussion of a similar plaque in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. That example bears an inscription stating that it was aboard a yacht at Ningpo during the third quarter of the 19th century.
