10th-12th century AD. A bronze scabbard chape with trefoil motif to the upper edge on each face; the lower edge with a discoid pad; to each face a high-relief design of stylised opposed loops with lozengiform punched ornament; incised chevrons and ring-and-dot motifs to the sides. Cf. similar profiled but less ornate chape found at Cherwell, Oxfordshire recorded on the PAS website at http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/520509. 26.69 grams, 45mm (1 3/4"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the European art market in 2013.
