A large carved fine-grained green basalt Taino or Archaic Period pestle depicting a human-headed axolotl with its legs tucked underneath the body, raised ribbed detailing to the spine and legs, crescentic head with annulet eyes and wide mouth; supplied with a custom-made display stand. 1.2 kg total, 22cm including stand (8 3/4"). Property of a Brussels gentleman; previously in a private New York collection; formerly in the Geroge Green & Terry Allen collection, Jefferson City, Missouri, USA; found Florida in the early 20th century.
