N 7, Retuschen. - Wir danken Ellis Dullaart vom RKD in Den Haag für wertvolle Hinweise. - Der einflußreichste flämische Landschaftsmaler des frühen 17. Jhs. B. war zunächst Schüler von D. Wortelmans in Antwerpen, bevor er um 1576 seinem Bruder Mathijs nach Rom folgte. Er etablierte sich zunächst als Maler von Fresken im Vatikan, bevor er begann, auch Tafelbiler zu schaffen. Unter seinen Auftraggebern waren drei Päpste und zahlreiche Kardinäle. Seine Bilder wurden auch nach Nordeuropa exportiert und fanden dort viele Käufer und Nachahmer. N 7, retouchings. - We are grateful to Ellis Dullaart from the RKD in The Hague for her kind assistance. - The most influential Flemish landscape painter of the early 17th cent. B. was pupil of D. Wortelmans in Antwwerpen before following his brother Mathijs to Rome around 1576. He soon succeeded as fresco painter and received commissions from three popes and numerous cardinals. His paintings were also exported to Northern Europe where they also sold very well and inspired many followers.
