English, 18th or early 19th century. Oil on canvas, housed in a gilt frame, unsigned; 21.25 x 17.25 in. (sight), 29 x 25 in. (frame). The plaque affixed to the frame misidentifies the sitter as Sir James Graham. It is in fact Sir James Coutts who is portrayed here. An almost identical portrait of Sir James Coutts, Esquire, is listed in David Mannings' catalogue raisonne of Reynolds' paintings. Variations between the two portraits include the sitter's collar, the shape of his head, and most importantly, the work's dimensions, the portrait offered here being significantly smaller than the one mentioned in the raisonne. Sotheby's, New York, sold the listed portrait of Coutts by Reynolds at auction in 2007.This painting was exhibited at the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1944.Literature:Mannings, David. Sir Joshua Reynolds: A Complete Catalouge of his Paintings, New Haven and London, 2000, vol. I, pp. 148-149.Provenance: From the property of the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, Richmond, Indiana;Ex Collection of Robert W. Lyons, son of Dr. Samuel R. Lyons, pastor of the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church from 1901 to 1915, and donated to the church in 1944;Acquired from Newhouse Gallery, N. Y.
