Gustav Schönleber, In the Breakers
Signed and dated lower left: G. Schoenleber 1906
With a label of the Künstlerbund Karlsruhe from 1908 to the reverse.
The Swabian landscape painter Gustav Schönleber is considered to be one of the pioneers of Impressionism in Germany. His works were displayed in the German pavillion at the first Venice Biennale in 1895 alongside those of Max Liebermann and Fritz von Uhde.
This marine painting was exhibited numerous times throughout the artist's lifetime and was later in the possession of the Stuttgart industrialist Robert Bosch. It depicts a sailing boat with two fishers in oilskins. The ship's sails are cut off by the upper edge of the canvas, a motif which was frequently utilised by Schönleber to create a deliberately cropped image.
