Description

Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of bronze stamp seals some accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (A1) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 27 x 22.5 x 8 mm. This is oblong, with a flat back with loop handle of sheet metal with grooves over it. The face is divided into four oblongs, each with three parallel bands, the four arranged so that these three bands are not parallel to those of an adjacent oblong. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2500-2300 B.C. It is a little worn, but generally in very good condition. This is one of the not so common geometrical patterns in the compartmented seals of this culture.'; (B-33) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 14.5 x 36 x 23 mm. The flat face is compartmented, and on the solid back is a heavy handle ending in a pierced pointed loop. The shape is wavey [sic], with small curved ends, and the intaglio consists of two wavey [sic] bands. The seal comes from the Bronze Age of west central Asia, and probably dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. The piece has incrustation on the surface which could be removed, and it is in good condition.'; (V-767) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 37 x 35 x 14 mm. This is both compartmented and open-work, and bears the shape of the design. It is a grid of lines: there is a central tall stroke, two longer strokes, one each end, at 90°, and in between two shorter strokes, these four supporting a crescent at each side. On the back is a handle of inverted V-shape. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The handle is worn down at the tip and broken, also one corner of the main grid is broken and the two ends pressed together. Otherwise the piece is in good condition. The metal is sound. The design of this seal is unusual.'; (V-765) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 39 x 26 x 11 mm. This is both compartmented and open-work, and bears the shape of the design. Two sets of parallel diagonal lines at opposite angles cross in the middle, and their ends are enclosed by a single line. On the back there is a handle in the form of a wide inverted V-shape. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface, also some pressed earth, but it is in good condition.'; (V-233) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 45 x 44 x 17.5 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a stout handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a rosette of eight petals within a plain outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The seal is a little bent, and the outer rim and band are both dented and in one place damaged, but the condition is generally fair.'; (T-739) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 32 x 29 x 29 mm.This has a roughly oval shape, with flat compartmented face and flat back on which is mounted a tall stalk handle with loop on top, now broken. The design is a pattern of shapes. Four long oblongs with shorter oblongs alongside them meet in the middle, and the quarters thus created are filled with a triangle and a curving band (now worn off "). This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. It is a rare type of design, but the edges of the piece are worn down, and the metal is covered with corrosion.'; (T-526) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 43 x 43 x 12 mm.This has the shape of the design. The face is flat and both compartmented and open-work. The back is also flat with a loop handle of inverted U-shape. The design consists of a Greek cross with stepped struts supporting the arms and strokes divided off the ends of the arms. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The metal has been conserved and it is in very good condition.' 166 grams, 27-45 mm (1 - 1 3/4 "). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
