13th-14th century AD. A lead pilgrim's badge depicting the veiled bust of St Veronica within a pelletted border, remains of pin to the reverse. 4.8 grams, 24mm (1"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the 1970s. St Veronica attended the fallen Jesus while carrying his cross to calvary, she wiped his face with her veil leaving an imprint. The relic was kept at St Peter's Cathedral in Vatican, being regularly put on display and becoming one of chief attractions by the 14th century.
