Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals comprising: one discoid with compartmented scalloped cross; and four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (R-499) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 37 x 35 x 19mm. This is roughly square with flat face and flat back, on which a handle of inverted U-shape is mounted. The design is compartmented and open-work. It consists of an outer band within which a simple cross divided the area into quarters, though only one bar of this cross reaches both ends, the transverse bar is divided into two parts. Each quarter thus created is filled with an L-shape creating a small square at each outer corner. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer edges are dented and the corners worn, but while there is incrustation on most of the surface, this could be removed.'; (V-210) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 42 x 40 x 39 x 33mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat compartmented face and flat back on which is mounted a stalk handle with loop on its top. The design has three similar parts which meet in the middle after the fashion of a trefoil, and in the centre of the whole three curving lines meet which begin within each segment. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The piece is in generally good condition, and the incrustation on the surface could be removed. The end of each segment may be an abstract rendering of a camels neck and head.'; (T-412) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 33 x 38 x 17mm. This has the form of what is depicted: a heraldic eagle with head sideways at the top, wings out beneath, talons out beneath the wing, and tail feathers spread at the bottom. The face is flat, compartmented and open-work. The back is also flat, with a handle of inverted V-shape. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The metal has been conserved and the piece is in very good condition.'; (T-162) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 37 x 36 x 16mm. This has flat face and flat back, on which a handle, rectangular with narrower top than base and pierced at the base, is mounted. The design consists of scorpion within an outer band. The design is both compartmented and open-work. The seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has a little incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but the metal is in good condition, and the only damage is denting to the outer rim.' 177 grams total, 37-46mm (1 1/2-1 3/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers T-412, V-210, R-499, T-162, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
