Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including nine accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: V-764) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 39 x 34 x 11 mm. This seal is compartmented and open-work, and bears the shape of the design. It consists of two sets of three parallel diagonal lines at opposite angles, crossing in the middle. Parallel lines at each end enclose the whole. On the back there is a handle of inverted V-shape. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. One of the 'lines' is broken, but otherwise the seal is in good condition. It is covered with incrustation, but the metal appears to be sound.'; U-536) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 31 x 30 x 11 mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat compartmented and open-work face, and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design consists of a central Greek cross with circular bands added to the ends of the arms of this cross. Struts join these bands. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in good condition and a fine example of its type.'; T-876) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 38 x 38 x 13 mm. This is round with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a rosette, with six petals around a circular band, the whole within an outer plain rim. The spaces between the petals are filled with crescents based on the outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The metal has been cleaned and conserved, and the whole is in good condition.'; R-747) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 39 x 35 x 18 mm. This has the shape of a trefoil with curving ends. The face is flat and compartmented, the back is also flat and has a stalk handle the end of which broke off in antiquity, and so a secondary hole was drilled through the stump. The design consists of a central hole and the trefoil around it with a dividing stroke in each of the arms. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. There is incrustation on the surface which could be removed, and there is very slight damage to one of the tips, but generally it is in good condition.'; R-521) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 47 x 47 x 11 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of an outer band, and an inner square to the outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but the metal beneath appears to be in good condition. Save for denting of the outer rim the piece is in very good condition.'; K-3) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 48 x 46 x 14 mm. This is round, compartmented and open-work, with a rounded loop handle on the back. The face shows an outer band within which in an eight--pointed star and a circular band at the centre of the star. This is a seal from west central Asia, dating to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is generally in very good condition, only the outer edge being a little dented in places.'; U-350) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 37 x 37 x 18 mm. This is round, with flat compartmented face, and flat back on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design consists of a simple cross and a broad V-shape filling each quarter so created , thus giving the impression of Greek cross. This is a seal from west central Asia, dating to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is generally in good state of the edge, and denting of the outer rim. The metal has been conserved.'; R-501) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 40.5 x 39.5 x 14 mm. This is roughly square with projections at each corner. The face and back are flat, and on the back there is a loop handle of sheet metal with thickened edges. The design, which is compartmented, consists of an inner circle within a square frame, around which are four beams with ends crossing each other. This is a seal from west central Asia, dating to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in very good state if preservation, and the incrustation on the surface could be removed.'; C-19) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 31 x 31 x 15 mm. This is a compartmented seal, partly open-work, with a large pierced handle on the back. It was probably meant to be square, but at present it is irregularly shaped, perhaps due to pressure at one point at some time in the past. The design consists of a W-shape above an inverted V-shape, with a surrounding band in shaped division. The outer edge has notches. This is a seal from west central Asia, dating to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in generally very good condition. The design is rare.' 207 grams total, 31-45.5mm (1 1/4 - 1 3/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
