Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including nine accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (T-692) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 31 x 33 x 24 mm. This is round with flat compartmented face, and flat back on which is mounted a central circular sheet and a stalk handle ending in an oval pierced loop. The design on the face appears to be abstract, composed of curing lines, including a row of scallops. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The outer rim is broken off in two places, and the design a little damaged, but generally it is in fair condition.'; (T-678) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 21 x 19 mm. This has a flat, roughly round face, and a back which rises steeply to a stalk handle with oval pierced top. The design on the face is done in raised lines and shows an abstract pattern. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The rim is worn down, and the loop also, but generally the piece is in good condition, and the metal sound.'; (T-189) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25 x 26 x 23 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back and convex back rising to a stalk handle surmounted by an oval pierced top. The design on the face consists of a pattern of raised lines within an outer rim: two crescents based on the rim and two irregular curling lines filling the rest of the space. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1700 B.C. It has an interesting design. There is incrustation on the surface, which could be removed. Generally the piece is in good condition.'; R-756) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 27 x 27 x 24.5 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back ,on which is mounted a short stalk handle with large oval, pierced top. The design on the face is linear: a horizontal line divides the area into two bending outwards, similarly the two on the left. Above are two crescents, one within the outer, and a single stroke from one side. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1700 B.C. It is heavier than most, but is worn, though the design remains clear.'; V-877) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 31 x 29 x 27 mm. This has a thick, disc bezel, and the hoop of strip metal is joined to it. The bezel has a design of a tree within a circle and a rhomb each side of the trunk below the branches. This comes from west central Asia and is of a rare type not easily dated, but perhaps 1500-500 B.C. are the right limits. It is covered with heavy corrosion.'; V-504) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, Face; 18 x 18 mm. Knob: 21 x 20 mm. Height: 26 mm. This has a round flat face, and a back which rises and curves inwards to a neck, above which is a substantial knob. The design consists of three parallel lines and to each side a dot in circle. This comes from west central Asia and is a rare type of seal not yet certainly dated, but probably c. 500 B.C. to 200 A.D. It is in fair condition.'; B-19) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 22 x 20.5 mm. The round flat face is compartmented. The solid back rises to a round pierced loop. The design is composed of a central circle with straight lines moving at three points to the rim, and three crescent-lines with ends also reaching the rim. This is a seal from the Bronze Age of west central Asia, perhaps to be dates c. 1500-500 B.C. There is some incrustation which could be removed, but otherwise it is in good condition.'; V-472) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 21.5 x 20 mm. This has a square shape, with flat face and slightly convex back in the centre of which is a short stout stalk handle ending in a pierced loop. The design on the face consists of a kind of formee cross with small hole in the centre and the four spaces around are filled with one scrolling stroke each. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is worn, but otherwise in good condition.'; U-474) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 26 x 26 x 17 mm. This has a round flat face and back which rises steeply to a stalk handle, now broken off, with secondary hole drilled sideways through the base of the stalk. The design is compartmented but is difficult to interpret. Half of it resembles the front of a crab or insect, but the outer half cannot be taken in that way. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is lacking the top of the handle, and there is one chip off the side of the seal, otherwise it is in good condition. The design is rare.' 240 grams total, 18-33mm (1/2 - 1 3/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
