Description

23rd-18th century BC. A mixed group of five bronze stamp seals, all accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (D-43) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25 x 26.5 x 15mm. This is of triangular shape, with flat face and back gently rising from the edges to the centre where a loop handle is fixed. The design shows a recumbent quadruped with bird's neck and head and with wings, raising one front paw. This comes from somewhere between the Black Sea and west central Asia, and dates to c. 1000-700 B.C. It is in fine condition. It is a rare type of seal.'; (43) 'Compartmented Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20.5 x 20.5 x 11m. This is flat, with a V-shaped loop on the back, and not openwork. It shows an eagle or vulture, with head sideways, wings spread, and talons at the bottom. This is a seal from west-central Asia, c. 2200-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition. The bird of prey is a common motif of these compartmented bronze seals.'; (K-16) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25 x 30 x 10.5mm. This has flat face and back, with loop handle mounted on the back. It has the shape of a standing dove or other such bird, and the face is compartmented. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a most attractive piece, and in fine condition. Such natural depictions in the shape are rare in seals of this area and period.'; (R-774) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 27 x 26.5 x 10.5mm. This has the shape of the thing depicted, with a flat face, convex back rising to the middle where a handle of inverted U-shape with three grooves over it is mounted. The design, which is compartmented, shows an eagle in heraldic pose: head sideways at the top with beak raised, spread wings below, and spread tail-feathers at the bottom. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a most attractive piece and in very good condition -- the metal has been conserved -- save for slight damage to the beak of the bird.'; (T-435) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 19 x 20 x 23mm. This has a roughly round flat face and a convex back which rises to a stalk handle with oval pierced loop on top. The design on the face is linear, consisting of a spiralling line starting from the edge with six struts connecting it to the edge. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-1800 B.C. There is wear and damage to the rim and the loop is cracked, but otherwise this is in good condition: the incrustation could be removed.' 53 grams total, 21-32mm (3/4-1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers T-435, R-774, K-16, 43, D-42, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
