Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including eight accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: R-504 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 44 x 43 x 15 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, with handle of inverted V-shape on the back. The design is both comepartmented and open-work. It consists of an outer band divided into two halves by a straight band, and each half is filled with two rough semicircles joined to the inner band and a third connecting the two to the outer band. The back bears incised decoration. This comes from west central Asia and dates to 2300-2000 B.C. The outer rim is dented, but otherwise the piece is in very good condition and the design is rare.'; V-876) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 47 x 46 x 12 mm. This has a round flat face with scalloped outer edge. The back is also flat with suspension loop of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of an outer band, plain but for scalloped edge, and within it a rosette formed of two concentric circles with eight attached petals. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has an attractive design and is generally in good condition.'; 52) Compartmented Stamp Seal of Bronze, 54 x 16 mm. This is round, with a handle in the back, and open-work as well as compartmented. There is a small inner circle in the very centre, around which is a band of curving lines in anticlockwise direction (on the metal), and beyond that is a second band of curving lines, in clockwise direction. A plain band surrounds the design and forms the edge. This is a seal from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-2000 B.C. The handle is damaged, and the outer edge dented in a few places, but generally the seal is in very good condition, though the original patina has gone.'; V-863) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 37 x 37 x 37 x 13 mm. This is triangular in shape, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of three bands of wide V-shapes, one for each corner of the piece. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. One corner is dented, otherwise it is in very good condition.'; U-67) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 44 x 44 x 16 mm. This is round with projecting points around the outer edge, having flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a simple cross the ends of the arms of which merge into a surrounding band with notched outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a fine example of its kind, and is in very good condition.'; P-57) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 40 x 39 x 22 mm. This is round with flat face and back, on which is mounted a large handle of inverted-V shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of an outer circle and a pattern of straight lines within it, the longest dividing the circle into two halves, the others being random. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, but appears to be in very good condition beneath this.'; R-685) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 48 x 47 x 14 mm. This is round with flat face and back on which is mounted a large handle of inverted-V shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a small Greek cross in the centre and a plant-like motif joining each outer end of the arms of the cross to an outer band. The plant-like motif consists of a short central stem ending in a crescent, and two curving line starting from the tips of the arm of the central cross. The outer band is divided into four quarters by short strokes. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer edge is a little dented and the tip of the handle has slight damage, but generally this piece is in very good condition.'; Q-5) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 46 x 43 x 20 mm. This is round, with flat face and back, on which is mounted an angular handle. The design, which is compartmented, consists of a rosette with nine petals around a small central circle. Five short struts connect this rosette to an outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is now incrusted, but could be cleaned. The metal appears to be in good condition.' 257 grams total,38-47mm (1 1/2 - 2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
