Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including eight accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: T-959) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 49 x 46 x 22.5 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape.The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central Greek cross, joined to an inner circle with eight struts, and this inner circle is joined to an outer circle by 12 struts. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with incrustation which could be removed. One piece of the outer circle is missing, otherwise it is generally in fair condition, the outer edge being dented in places.'; T-824) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 38.5 x 28 x 16 mm. This bears the shape of the design : it is roughly round with projections at regular intervals. The face is flat, as is the back, on which is a large handle with flat top and projecting strips around the sides. The design consists of a central quadrate cross each arm of which also serves are joined by crescents attached to their side arms. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The design is interesting, and the handle is of a rare type. Two of the crescents are damaged, otherwise the piece is in fair condition.'; T-799) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 38 x 38 x 12 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central Greek cross joined to a plain outer band by three struts from each arm: one straight from the centre of the end of the arm, two curving from the tips of the end of the arm. The outer band is divided into four quarters by short struts. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a little bent, and the outer rim, as often, is dented, but otherwise the piece is in good condition. The metal is sound.'; U-352) ) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 35 x 34 x 17 mm. This is roughly round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of rough inverted V-shape. The design is open-work and formed of a straight line dividing the circle into two halves and three lines at right angles to the dividing line dividing each half into four parts. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. it is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, and is generally in good condition.'; U-345) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 57 x 57 x 19 mm. This is roughly round, with slightly scalloped outer rim. The design is compartmented and open-work, and there is a handle of inverted V-shape on the back . The design consists if a central circle filled with a simple cross and around that nine 'petals' the tips of which join the outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in good condition save for the lack of one short strip of the outer rim.'; T-811) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 57 x 57 x 19 mm. This is very roughly square, with scalloped outer edges. The face is flat, as is the back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central Greek cross, the arms of which divided into curving bands joining those of the next arms. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer rim is dented and damaged in places, and the handle is also worn thin in part, but otherwise the piece is in good condition. The incrustation on the surface could be removed.'; V-889) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 54 x 53 x 27 mm. This has a circular hoop apparently made from strands of metal, and a very large bezel that is round with notched outer edge. The design on the face of the bezel consists of an outer band, plain save for the zig-zag edge, and within it a complicated design with matching halves forming two rough heart shapes with fillings at the sides. Save for the dividing line the design is based on curving lines. The back of the bezel also bears a design perhaps, but its condition make an interpretation difficult. This comes from a culture of ancient Iran or west central Asia which is so far unknown, so the date is difficult to suggest, However, c. 1000-1 B.C. is probably the correct period. The ring was hardly for daily use, but may have been part of grave goods. It is covered with heavy incrustation.'; V-390) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 37 x 37 x 14 mm. This is square, with small added crescent shapes at each corner. The face is flat with compartmented and open-work design. The back is flat with inverted U-shape handle. The design consists of a quadrate cross within a plain outer band, with a strut joining each corner of the square to the outer band, and with a dot in circle within the quadrate cross. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The corner pieces have some damage, and there is incrustation on the surface, which could be removed. However, it is in fair condition.' 269 grams total, 35-57mm (1 1/2 - 2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
