Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals comprising: four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-716) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 52 x 52 x 19mm. This is a round flat disc, with a round loop fixed to the middle of the back. The face is divided into quarters by a Greek cross and each quarter is filled with V-shapes, four in three of the quarters, three in the other one. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. It is a large specimen of its kind and generally in good condition, only the face is a little crushed. The metal is in good condition.'; (T-458) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 58 x 58 x 21mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a central figure with pointed ends and points in the middle and to each side of it a kind of Y-shape. These three items form a rough circle from which spiral out twelve motifs like plant buds. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer rim is worn down, but otherwise the piece is in good condition. There is some incrustation, which could be removed.'; (R-713) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 67 x 64 x 16mm. This is round, with scalloped outer edge, and with flat face and flat back, on which a handle of inverted U-shape is mounted. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a central Greek cross and the ends of each arm of the cross is joined to the outer band by a tree-like motif: a central straight stem and two pairs of upcurving lines from the stem to the outer band. Short struts connect the four 'trees'. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition, save for a little denting of the outer rim.'; (R-907) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 55 x 56 x 16mm. This is round with flat face an flat back on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design is both compartmented and open-work. it consists of a heraldic eagle with head sideways at the centre and is held by four group of crescents and other strokes, and other straight struts. They all rest on an outer band divided into four quarters by short struts. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer rim is dented and damaged at one place, but otherwise the piece is in very good condition.'; one discoid with openwork design of a centre small cross and struts forming a roughly square shapes around, inverted V-shape handle to the reverse. 270 grams total, 52-66mm (2-2 1/2").
