Description

Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of bronze stamp seals, some accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (P-60"). 'This is flat on face and back. The design is compartmented. It consists of a quadrate cross with circle in the middle. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is now covered with incrustation, which could be removed. The metal underneath, and the object as a whole, appears to be in very good condition.'; (R-489) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 20 x 24 mm. This has the shape of a trefoil with flat face and flat back on which is mounted a tall stalk handle with pierced loop on top.The design is a trefoil on one compartment, with dot in the middle.This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. It is a little damaged, and there is much incrustation on the surface, but the metal appears to be in good condition.'; (R-484) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 28 x 27 x 14 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design consists of a linear pattern of three crescents based on an outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1600 B.C. There is slight damage to the rim, and some little incrustation on the surface which could be removed, but the piece is generally in good condition with an attractive green patina.'; (T-23) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 23 x 22 x 35 mm. This has the form of a flat disc with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a tall handle with big round loop at the top.The design on the face is linear and consists of four crescents mounted on the edges, two of which are covered by larger crescents over them. There is a dot in the centre. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1700 B.C. The edges are a little worn, but generally this piece is in good condition.'; (T-5) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 20 x 15 mm. This is roughly round, with flat face and flat back, on which a handle of inverted V-shape is mounted. The design, which is compartmented and open-work, consists of a T-shape filling half the circle, and a crescent dividing the rest. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed. The metal beneath appears to be in good condition.'; (T-776) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 22 x 21 x 18 mm. This has the shape of what is represented: a trefoil, with flat face and flat back on which is mounted a handle of stalk type pierced for suspension. The design is contained within an outer rim creating a compartment. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but apart from a little denting of the rim the piece is in good condition.'; (U-265) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20 x 19 x 12 mm.This has a round flat face and flat back on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, achieved in raised lines and dots, consists is a simple cross dividing the circle into quarters, and in each quarter a crescent shape based on the outer rim convers [sic] a dot. The edges are bevelled.This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. There is incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, but generally the piece is in fair condition.'; (U-629) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 32 x 31 x 14 mm. This is a round disc, with flat faces, and on the back a handle of inverted U-shape is mounted. The design on the front consists of two concentric circles in the middle, and from the outer one 'spokes', 11 in number, extend to the outer rim. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is covered with heavy incrustation, which could be removed. The metal appears to be in good condition, as is the piece as a whole save for some wear to the edges. The design is compartmented.' 120 grams total, 24-35mm (3/4 - 1 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
