Millard joined the 1st New York Light Artillery with a second lieutenant's commission on December 29, 1864. He mustered into Battery H, which had been attached to the 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac since March of that year. Another example of this image is dated November 29, 1864 which suggests that Millard posed for the portrait in Troy prior to his departure for the battlefields of Virginia. He arrived in time to participate in the decisive Appomattox Campaign, March-April 1865, and mustered out on June 19, 1865 at Elmira, NY.
