Civil War CDV of Reclining Lieutenant John Aiken Millard Jr., 1st New York Light Artillery CDV of a recumbent soldier in uniform, accented by cuff links and a lace handkerchief. He poses on the boldly patterned carpet of a photography studio, with his right arm holding a sword and resting on a patterned box with a tassel, possibly a traveling case. In the foreground, field glasses are displayed, as well as a book propped against a forage cap. Studio imprint of Pine & Bell, Troy, NY on verso.Subject identified as John Aiken Millard, Jr. (1843-1914) of Troy, NY. Millard joined the 1st New York Light Artillery with a second lieutenant's commission on December 29, 1864. He mustered into Battery H, which had been attached to the 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac since March of that year. Another example of this image is dated November 29, 1864 which suggests that Millard posed for the portrait in Troy prior to his departure for the battlefields of Virginia. He arrived in time to participate in the decisive Appomattox Campaign, March-April 1865, and mustered out on June 19, 1865 at Elmira, NY.
