《释名·释首饰》：『步摇，上有垂珠，步则动摇也、。』《后汉书·舆服志下》：『步摇以黄金为山题，贯白珠为桂枝相缪，一爵（雀）九华（花）。』王先谦集解引陈祥道曰：『汉之步摇，以金为凤，下有邸，前有笄，缀五采玉以垂下，行则动摇。』 女子将步摇固定于发顶或鬓边，在行走之时，纤柔的金丝会不停地摇颤或者撞击，发出清脆的响声，给人以视觉和听觉上的美感，所以称之为『步摇』。本品以纯金制成，以较细的金丝弯转堆迭而成，以榴开百子为题，但见榴花盛开，枝叶繁茂，中间及金丝勾嵌白玉松鼠，攀附于石榴枝上，鼠在十二时辰为子，喻『子』之意，石榴与松鼠寓意多子多孙。
