Burma Pigeon's Blood Unheated Rubies
Burmese rubies, from the famed Mogok region, located a few hundred kilometres northeast of Mandalay, have long been recognised as the most desirable rubies in the world. The term "pigeon's blood", the most prized colour in a ruby, was first coined by Burmese Gemologist Han Htun, in reference to the 'red dot' in the centre of a pigeon's eye. As the majority of Mogok rubies possess a purple tint, "pigeon's blood" gems exhibiting a pure red body-colour with red UV-fluorescence are highly sought after. Large specimens over three carats, which are unheated, are scarcer still. Bonhams is privileged to offer this pair of rubies, perfectly matched in colour, of vivid red hue, have very good transparency, and with pure red fluorescence from the legendary Mogok mine.
