达摩额高方脸，隆鼻卷须，双目微合，凝视远方。袒胸，身着交领式袈裟，衣纹流转自如，以表现袈裟质地之柔软。右腿盘坐，左脚屈立，左手搭与左膝之上，右手置于身侧支撑身体。此像人物塑造生动，五官紧凑，神色安然，体现出达摩直契佛心、自明永恒的坚定与淡然。达摩为菩提达摩的简称，中国佛教禅宗的创始者。相传达摩为南天竺人，南朝宋末航海到广州，又往北洛阳，在嵩山少林寺面壁打坐九年，后遇慧可，授以《楞伽经》四卷。慧可承受了他的心法，于是禅宗得以流传。
