大肚弥勒在教化人间之时与孩童最为交好，常与孩童嬉戏，此件即描画出这一快乐的场景。南宋志盘撰写的《佛祖统记》记载了群儿戏布袋和尚的典故 ：「有十六群儿哗逐之，争挚其袋。」此后又多有演变，皆有「欢喜佛」、「送子佛」等吉祥寓意。整器造型生动，富有感染力，雕刻手法纯熟流畅，静中有动，耐人寻味。弥勒佛一副僧人模样，身形肥硕，阔步前行，慈眉善目，笑逐颜开，双耳垂肩，大腹便便，憨态可掬，，左侧稚子肩抗布袋仰头注视弥勒，好似想要说些什么，造像人物自然写实，活灵活现，充满童趣，若将其置于书桌一角随心望之，颇有身临其境之感。
