(VIEW) CA. 16 X 27 CM (6 5/16 X 10 5/8 IN.)NOTE Our paintings, treated according to Western conventions but with a finesse of execution characteristic of Chinese painting, were made in Canton for a Western audience. It was there that Chinese painters' studios created these superb "postcards" whose charm lies in their ambiguity. Thus the principles of composition, with converging lines, are Western but the subjects are strictly Chinese. It is about describing what travellers have seen or would have liked to see. Extremely precise attention is therefore paid to the material representation of ideally quiet, clean and tidy places. Foreigners, obviously, were interested in the Chinese way of life, at least in beautiful homes like this, and were looking for ideas and forms that could inspire their own industries. WORKS IN REPORT The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, preserves several paintings (including those with inventory numbers 9127:4 and 9127:5) that represent pavilions similar to ours and most likely come from the same studio.
