此件黄金掐丝锤碟镂空双狮纹海棠香盒，成色上佳，做工精细纯熟。盒形状若海棠花头，故称海棠盒。盒盖以锤碟镂空工艺制作结而成，中间雕琢一双狮纹，花瓣相接连缀成形。盒身用金片打制，内底刻梅花喜鹊，寓意喜上眉梢。外壁以小金珠焊缀成流云蝙蝠，与盒盖侧面图案相呼应。
海棠盒样式自宋代开始流行，经久不衰，是清代宫廷青睐的样式，还曾作为珍贵的礼物赏赐。《清实录》记载越南国王阮光平前来朝见时，乾隆帝为示笼络恩宠，赐予御笔书法和各种珍宝，有金线葫芦大荷包一对、小荷包四对、内分贮金钱二个、金八宝一分、又白玉鹅一件、汉玉象一件、珐琅金盘一件、海棠盒一对、奶皮一匣、奶饼一匣。
