Description

Medals: a Victorian Naval General Service Medal with 'Trafalgar' clasp awarded to Robert Niven (renamed in italics); according to the accompanying research this medal was unofficially named or renamed due to a misspelling of the recipient's name on the Trafalgar and NGSM rolls as 'Robert Nevin', 'Navin' or 'Naven' of service/ship's pay book no. SB 588 - see National Archives references ADM 73/19/83, 29/46/447, 29/26/477 and 29/29/477. The research identifies these spelling variations to very likely be one and the same Robert Niven to whom this NGSM is named and who served as an Ordinary Seaman on HMS Mars from 1803 to 1813 and HMS Bellerephon from 26th July 1813 to 13th September 1815 during which time Napoleon Bonaparte was being held on board; also included is genealogical research and photocopied documentation listing his birthplace as Glasgow (Lanark), trade as a cotton labourer/weaver, later residence and death on 21st June 1854 at Greenwich Hospital with rheumatism among the listed causes.
