Mid 4th century AD. A bronze crossbow military fibula of Keller type 3, with elongated diagonal section, short facets on the front and long facets on the back, broad onion-shaped knobs, bow shorter than the foot. Cf. Mackreth, D.F., Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, 2 volumes, Exeter, 2011, fig.11888, pl.139, p.142. 51.6 grams, 80mm (3"). Property of a London lady; from her family collection formed in the 1970s. This kind of crossbow fibula was usually employed in the Roman army from the end of the third century AD until the sixth century AD, and also fitted in miniature specimens to the sons of the soldiers.
