Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st-2nd century AD. An ellipsoid pale carnelian gemstone with intaglio scene of a slim winged figure with arms extended holding the horns of two addorsed ibexes; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 2.47 grams, 19mm (3/4"). Property of a Middlesex lady; acquired on the London art market in 2007; formerly in a private collection formed in the 1980s. The iconography is reminiscent of the so-called 'Master of Animals' motif which recurs throughout the art of eastern Europe, Asia Minor, the western Steppe, Nepal, Ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley. It must have carried different meanings in the various cultures which used it. The animals are often shown pacified or tame, but sometimes appear to be struggling to break free from the deity's grip.
