2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze military phalera representing the prominent bust of the god Mars (Greek Ares) or of some high military commander (tribunus, dux) clad in muscled armour (statos), carrying a pseudo-attic helmet (galea) with a chin-guard (vinculum), the small disc still presenting the four holes for the fastening to the leather background. See similar item in silver in The Walters Art Gallery, Early Christian and Byzantine Art, Baltimore, 1947, pl.LI, n.358, Bp.363. 27 grams, 51mm (2"). Property of a South London collector; acquired before 1980. Such military phalerae decorated the breast of the officers, mounted upon leather structures, or could also be used as horse military harness fittings.
