A carved sandstone of Shiva in four-armed manifestation; the vertically pleated sampot secured by a broad waist-belt with decorative closure; the hair gathered tight to the head and surmounted by a band with figure of a deity sitting cross-legged; thickened lower legs to support the free-standing figure; mounted on a custom-made stand. 29.2 kg total, 1.08m with stand (42 1/2"). Property of an East Sussex gentleman; from his private collection formed between 1983 and 1990; formerly in a South East London collection formed in the 1970s; accompanied by Geologic Report TL005272 from Dr Ronald Bonewitz.
